When people start thinking about moving to the South Shore of Massachusetts, towns like Hingham, Milton, and Duxbury often get a lot of attention. But there’s another community that I think deserves to be much higher on many homebuyers’ lists: Weymouth, Massachusetts.
Weymouth offers something that can be surprisingly difficult to find this close to Boston—a combination of established neighborhoods, convenient transportation, access to the water, plenty of everyday amenities, and a wide variety of housing options.
And perhaps best of all, Weymouth still feels like a community rather than simply an extension of the city.
A Location That’s Hard to Beat
One of Weymouth’s biggest advantages is its location.
Situated roughly 15 miles south of Boston, Weymouth provides relatively easy access to the city while putting you firmly on the South Shore. Routes 3 and 18 provide connections to surrounding communities and major highways, while MBTA commuter rail service gives residents another option for getting into Boston.
That makes Weymouth particularly appealing to people who want suburban living without feeling disconnected from the city.
You’re also close to neighboring communities including Quincy, Braintree, Hingham, Abington, Rockland, and Holbrook, making shopping, dining and commuting throughout the South Shore convenient.
Four Villages, Each With Its Own Personality
One thing people unfamiliar with Weymouth don’t always realize is just how varied the town can feel.
Weymouth is traditionally divided into four main areas: North Weymouth, East Weymouth, South Weymouth, and Weymouth Landing.
North Weymouth puts you closer to the water and some wonderful outdoor spaces. East Weymouth has established residential neighborhoods and convenient access to local businesses. South Weymouth has experienced considerable development over the years, including the Union Point area, while Weymouth Landing has benefited from redevelopment and its location near the Braintree line.
As a Realtor, this is one of the things I find particularly interesting about Weymouth. Two homes with the same “Weymouth, MA” address can offer very different surroundings and lifestyles.
Yes, Weymouth Has a Coastline
This sometimes surprises people who aren’t familiar with the town.
Weymouth has a beautiful coastal side, particularly in North Weymouth, where residents can enjoy views and access to the Fore River and Hingham Bay.
Webb Memorial State Park is one of my favorite examples. Its walking paths, grassy areas and water views make it a great place to walk the dog, get some exercise, have a picnic, or simply spend an hour outside enjoying the South Shore.
There are also numerous conservation areas, parks and recreational spaces throughout Weymouth, so you don’t have to travel very far to get outdoors.
Housing With More Variety Than You Might Expect
Another reason Weymouth deserves more attention from buyers is the variety of its housing stock.
Depending on the neighborhood, you’ll find classic Capes, Colonials, ranches, older New England homes, condominiums, townhouses, multifamily properties and newer construction.
That diversity means Weymouth can appeal to people at very different stages of life—from someone purchasing a first condominium to buyers looking for a larger single-family home or homeowners hoping to downsize while remaining on the South Shore.
And while real estate values have risen substantially throughout Greater Boston, Weymouth can sometimes offer buyers alternatives to some of the higher-priced communities immediately surrounding it.
Of course, pricing can vary significantly by neighborhood, condition, size and property type, which is why understanding the local market at a very granular level matters.
Everyday Convenience Is a Big Part of the Appeal
A great community isn’t just about what your house looks like. It’s also about what life looks like once you walk out the front door.
Weymouth residents have convenient access to restaurants, grocery stores, medical facilities, gyms and everyday shopping. South Shore Hospital is located in town, and major shopping destinations in Braintree, Hingham and surrounding communities are only a short drive away.
You’re also close enough to Quincy to take advantage of its growing restaurant scene and easy enough to Route 3 to head farther down the South Shore.
It’s the kind of location where most of what you need on a normal Tuesday doesn’t require an expedition.
A Town That Still Feels Like a Town
This may be the quality that’s hardest to quantify.
Despite its size and proximity to Boston, Weymouth still has established neighborhoods where people know their neighbors, local businesses that have been around for years, youth sports, community events and generations of families who have chosen to remain in the area.
At the same time, new residents continue to discover the town.
That mixture of longtime residents and newcomers gives Weymouth a character that’s distinctly its own.
Is Weymouth Right for You?
There isn’t one South Shore community that’s right for everyone.
Some buyers prioritize proximity to Boston. Others want a large yard, access to the commuter rail, a condominium with minimal maintenance, proximity to the water, or simply the most house they can comfortably purchase within their budget.
That’s why I always encourage buyers to look beyond a town’s reputation and spend some time actually exploring its neighborhoods.
Drive through North Weymouth. Walk around Webb Memorial State Park. Explore South Weymouth. Stop for lunch. Take a look at the different styles of homes.
You may discover that Weymouth offers much more than you expected.
