If you’re thinking about moving to Massachusetts’ South Shore, you’ve probably asked one of the most common questions I hear from buyers:
“Which town should I live in?”
After helping buyers throughout the South Shore for many years, I’ve learned there’s no universal answer.
There isn’t one perfect town.
There’s the town that’s perfect for you.
Some people want to wake up near the water. Others are looking for an easy commute into Boston. Some dream of a walkable downtown with great restaurants and local shops, while others picture a quiet neighborhood where they know their neighbors by name.
One of the things I enjoy most about my job is helping people discover not just the right house, but the right community. After the moving truck leaves, it’s the community that becomes part of your everyday life.
Why I Chose Quincy
People often ask me why I know Quincy so well.
The answer is pretty simple.
I wasn’t born here.
I chose it.
When I first started my real estate career, I was living in Boston. Then life took an unexpected turn. I met someone who lived in Quincy, and after spending time here, I decided to make the move.
At first, Quincy was simply the place I drove to visit someone special.
Once I became a full-time resident, everything changed.
I quickly realized Quincy offered so much of what I loved about Boston while giving me something I didn’t expect: a stronger sense of community, incredible convenience, and a lifestyle that felt more relaxed without giving up access to the city.
Before long, I had favorite restaurants, favorite walking routes, and favorite places to unwind after work.
One place will always be special to me.
My very first date was at Tony’s Clam Shop on Wollaston Beach.
Funny enough, all these years later, I’m still going back.
Even more meaningful are the friendships that grew from living here. Some of the first neighbors I met became close friends, and we’re still part of each other’s lives today.
That’s something you can’t see on a listing sheet.
It’s what turns a town into home.
Every South Shore Town Has Its Own Personality
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that all South Shore towns are basically the same.
They’re not.
Quincy has a completely different feel than Hingham.
Weymouth offers a different lifestyle than Braintree.
Hanover has its own pace and personality.
Each community has something unique to offer, which is why I spend just as much time talking about my clients’ lifestyles as I do discussing bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage.
The right home is important.
The right community is priceless.
My Advice to Anyone Relocating
One piece of advice I give almost every buyer moving to the South Shore is this:
Practice living there before you buy.
Drive to work during your normal commute.
Visit the grocery store you’ll probably use.
Stop for coffee.
Go to the gym you plan on joining.
If you have a favorite barber, hairstylist, or weekend breakfast spot, see what that drive feels like from your potential new home.
Traffic throughout Greater Boston can change dramatically depending on the time of day and the direction you’re traveling. A home may check every box on your wish list, but your daily routine is what ultimately determines how much you’ll enjoy living there.
I’ve found that spending a few hours experiencing everyday life in a neighborhood often tells buyers more than touring another ten houses.

If we were sitting down over coffee instead of reading this online, here’s what I’d tell you.
Don’t buy a town because someone else says it’s the “best.”
Buy the town that feels right for your life.
Some people fall in love with the waterfront in Quincy.
Others can’t imagine living anywhere but Hingham.
Some want a quiet neighborhood in Hanover, while others enjoy being close to restaurants and public transportation.
There isn’t a wrong answer.
The goal isn’t to find the most popular town.
It’s to find the one that feels like home every time you pull into your driveway.
That’s one of my favorite parts of being a Realtor. Helping people discover that feeling never gets old.
